  • Simple Decorating Tips for Students on a Budget

Brighten up your room with affordable decor

Let’s face it student accommodation can be pretty bland at the best of times, but with a few handy decorating tips, you can easily transform your surroundings into a dreamy new space, that feels home from home, won’t cost the earth and will leave you feeling inspired and ready to take on all that University life has to offer!

    Creative Desk Space
You’ll probably be spending some time at your desk, so if you haven’t got room for a traditional desk, then a simple solution could be a ladder desk, with built-in shelving. You can store your folders and books on the shelves above the desk and add a colour light, photos and plants to add some interest.

    Foldaway Tables
If you’re stuck for space in your student bedroom then why not look at folding tables as a practical solution for small rooms, when not in use they can be easily stored away. They also add a decorative touch to any room in the house. They can be used for a multitude of different scenarios; TV dinners, storing books, used as a bedside table, serving drinks from the tray. They are also well priced at only £29.99.

    Cosy Corners
Enhance your student bedroom with cosy soft furnishings like cushions and throws to add some home comfort and texture to your space. Throws and blankets come in all shapes, sizes and materials, but for the on-going autumnal months why not choose a gorgeous faux throw as an option.

    Nifty Storage
If you don’t have room for storing clothes then consider investing in clothes rails which is a cheap alternative to a traditional wardrobe. Use every nook in your room and use storage crates to store clothes, books, toiletries, towels – they come in all sorts of colours and materials and are a cheap way of clearing the clutter and organising your belongings.

    Crates for Storage

    Mirror mirror on the wall
If you can hang items on the wall then why not look at adding a mirror which can enhance your room by creating the illusion of space. Save even more space simply by using the back of your door or if there’s room, use a full-size mirror and angle it from the floor.

    Picture Perfect
Picture frames and chalkboards are a great way to keep notes and personal keepsakes close to hand but also make sure you stay organised and uncluttered. Multi-sized picture frame boards are fantastic for keeping all your favourite personal photographs in one place whereas you can write to-do lists on chalkboards, an easy way to keep up to date.

    Hook line and sinker
Another top tip for keeping a small space neat and tidy is by using either single hooks to hang items on the back of the door or shelving with hooks to store books, files and other keepsakes. Wire storage not only looks fresh and modern but can also help you keep your room organised and doesn’t need to cost the earth either.

  • Spring Clean Your Home

Now is the time to start afresh and clear out the clutter that has amalgamated over the past year.  As William Morris wisely pointed out, "have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”

We have a range of great storage ideas that will help you keep your house neat and tidy. For instance, if you have a small guest room but do not have space to fit a wardrobe why not consider a simple hanging rail. We have two options available, both ornate in look and feel but they would not only enhance the space but also add some elegant charm to a room.

  • Sue Ryder Online Shop Spring Collection Photographic Shoot

There’s nothing we enjoy more than taking some of our most vibrant and exciting products and creating fantastic new lifestyle imagery for the Sue Ryder Online shop. We regularly plan photographic shoots throughout the year, especially when we need to promote our exclusive furniture collections.

    Sue Ryder Occasional Chairs

On 8th March 2017, the Online shop team, armed with various props, with cars stuffed full of chairs, tables and various other bits and pieces, including the odd drill to assemble our furniture, headed off to our location at Thorpe Hall, in Peterborough.

    Thorpe Hall Peterborough

Thorpe Hall at Longthorpe in the city of Peterborough, is a beautiful Grade 1 listed building, built by Peter Mills between 1653 and 1656, for the Lord Chief Justice, Oliver St John. After a period as a hospital, the hall is currently used as a hospice for Sue Ryder.

With its grand façade, lofty interior spaces complete with huge windows, high ceilings, and neutral backdrops, we decided that this was the perfect location for our latest photographic shoot.

    Decorative Lanterns

Luckily the weather was on our side and apart from a few drops of rain, we managed to assemble the furniture using our trusty hand-held drills but also shoot most of our new garden furniture and statues outside in the impressive landscaped gardens.

    Brand new kids furniture

The whole process is important to us – Planning – Shooting – Editing – all of these steps are essential when it comes to successful product photography.

Garden Bistro Three Piece Bistro Set

A great working relationship with a professional photographer is an absolute “must” especially if the objective is to achieve beautiful aspirational photographs. We were, therefore, incredibly lucky to have acquired the expertise of Northamptonshire Lifestyle and Wedding photographer Georgi Mabee who joined the team for the day. Her years of experience really helped us focus on what we wanted to achieve for every shot and because of this detailed planning, we managed to get through all seventy shots within the day.

    Pretty Wicker Storage Bench

After several hours of unpacking boxes, shifting key pieces of furniture into the perfect position and then enhancing the shot with the right props we managed to complete the entire shoot by 4.00 pm!

  • Get the look - Scandi Style

Scandinavian interior design combines simplicity, utility, and beauty with pared back style centered around warm functionality, clean lines, and effortless craftsmanship. The use of light is important within this genre as are muted tones,  natural materials, and minimal fuss.

Scandi Style Interior Example of Scandi Style Interior

Create a fresh, vibrant and contemporary feel in your home this Spring with our range of Scandi style furniture. The Stockholm furniture collection is designed for modern living, offering style and practicality with a sympathetic minimalistic approach.

Scandi Round Tables Scandi Round Tables

The inspiration for our Stockholm collection came from the current fascination with Scandi interiors. We wanted to create a co-ordinated furniture range that could easily translate into any interior space but also provides the eye with a point of interest.

The trend for a bold geometric pattern is still strong within the home and with this in mind, we opted for a fresh and zesty bold geometric design on a sleek modern-shaped chair. If you want a room that looks like it's hopped off the page of a magazine then adding a pop of colour and bold pattern are absolutely key to nailing this look.

Retro Scandi Chair Scandi Geometric Chair

The use of natural wooden legs across all pieces within the range creates a consistent look and feel. You can soften up the look by introducing rugs, a great way to add an accent colour, perhaps taken from the chair, whilst adding a level coziness and comfort to your home.

100% of the profits raised from the sale of these items will help our hospice and neurological care programme.

  • Why We Love Children’s Furniture

It’s always exciting for the team when we first see new product samples in the Sue Ryder New Goods office. But the samples that we love to see the most are the children’s furniture.

Here are some of the top reasons why we love furniture for children:

    It’s Fun!

We think one of the most exciting parts of being a parent is watching your child’s likes and tastes develop. Furniture with fun patterns and bright colours, (more often than not, far from what we’d choose for our ourselves) is a great way to help children put their own stamp on their playrooms or bedrooms.

    We Can Personalise It

Some our our children’s furniture, the Funky Monkey and Funky Fairy stools, for example, can be personalised with your child’s name. We think the personalised items make a great unique gift for a special occasion.

You Can Let It Get Messy

Little people make a big mess. So if you don’t fancy felt tip all over your sofa or PVA on the kitchen table, furniture for children might just be a good idea! Our children’s furniture is priced modestly with this in mind. Find our range here.
